I suppose if I were going to wear a shirt tucked into them, that would be the thing to do, but I hardly ever tuck a shirt into pants.
The no tucking rule is a bit of a problem for me. I work in a more formal environment and not tucking is just too casual. I like tops with a welt at the bottom that can mimic the look of something tucked in but can be arranged lower down.
I do my best to avoid square shaped tops since that makes me look very squat on top. Then I tried my first pair of mid-rise pants and suddenly I looked proportional! It was like I heard angels singing! A new chapter opened for me…untucked shirts, torso-lengthening tricks of the eyes, etc. I started experimenting with all the things on this list. My legs are long so I was able to visually lower my waistline easily.
It just seemed to make my whole body look more balanced. I am all over the new-ish angled hems trend. I find it looks really good on my body. I am going to enjoy it as long as retailers continue to offer it! Your advice is spot on, and I had sort of figured out these tips worked for me through trial-and-error over the years. Wish I could have seen this list when I was a teenager. It would have saved me so much angst. Well, since I can easily fit 3 yes, three! There is a lot of real estate between my waist and my bust—which maybe explains my love for cropped tops over a hip-length T!
I never connected it to the body lengthening issue. Note to self to remember that one! Even though I now know that I am neither long nor short-waisted, I appreciate the advice offered in this post so I can continue to recognize how to analyze and choose the best looks for my body type. Your writing style is very clear and concise, Angie! Amy, have you tried semi tucking a top into a mid-rise? I like the banded top strategy. Laura and Chrizzle, another good point about body modifiers.
Empire waists, although great on a short waist, are hard to fit on a large bust. Kristjen, do you ever show the waistband of your bottoms? And as i recall, you almost always wear a column of colour. That camouflages the length of any waist right away. Thanks for the hint. I have longer arms, though, so the sleeve length is a problem. Second test confirms what I already knew—short waisted and long lower torso. Also have the narrow ribcage and larger breasts, which are indeed hanging lower these days.
Empire is pretty much out of the question. Because I was tall, I believed the fashion advice to wear contrasting colors tops and bottoms. Finally got a chance to use the tape measure. Definately not short waisted here. Long torso short legs, but really I knew that. Another member of Team Short Waist here.
These are great tips Angie thanks I have a large bust too so I always spend money on good bras. Angie, I have tried the semi-tuck. Just reading this list is enough to realize that I am short waisted. A V necked, diagonal lined, untucked top is among my most flattering. I am pretty balanced but slightly short waisted and want to experiment with all these tips. Thanks for the posts and the comments are terrific too!
I must be one of the rare types. I do like mid- to low-rise jeans, though I just got a couple of higher-rise ones. I think the mid-rise is still more flattering to me. I do love angled hems; now I know why. Basically, I am a plump pear-shape with boobs providing an illusion of hourglassness. I find that for my particular set of priorities and on my particular body, some kind of deep scoop or boatneck worn semi-tucked with belted midrise trousers makes me feel most balanced.
I am going to measure tomorrow but doing the hand test I am short waisted. I think that is why I am so attractive to asymmetrical tops. Thank-you for the tips! Another one hand club member. Actually, one hand and one finger to be exact.
I have always known this. Usually I try to dress around it, but recently past year I decided to just embrace my own body and wear things like tucked high waisted jeans anyway. I must temper this look with a v neck or wide boat or scoop neckline though. I am very fussy about top length because tops that end at that wide upper thigh point not only chop me in half unless tonal , they also point an arrow to my hips.
Much to my surprise, I can fit exactly two hand widths between my bust and natural waist. I have always thought I was short waisted. Fabulous info Angie, thanks. I had no idea I was as short waisted as my daughter — only one hand width here! I am one of those rare birds with a long rise, this advice goes double.
Angie and Suz, thanks for addressing my question about challenges. Having a small bust definitely mitigates many of them. My problem is that I really want to wear skirts, particularly the mini a-line skirts.
Are there any low-waisted a-line skirts at all? Or is there a way I can wear the high-waisted skirts so it will flatter my short-waisted body?
Adding to my short waist I am not quite 5 feet tall. So now I have to figure out how to hide my middle too. I have just a hand space between my bust and my hip. The best thing for me being short waisted is skinny jeans with a loose top and a jacket with a high heel. You can make this look classy or casual. I find that tops with set in sleeves work better than raglan.
Dolman sleeves are completely out if the top is nipped at the waist. However, it can be elongating if the hem goes past your hips. The other thing that works for me are dresses with a vertical row of contrasting buttons down the centre front — like shirt dresses.
I throw away the belts! If the buttons match the material I snip them off and put mother of pearl buttons on instead. I often do this with shirts as well to create more vertical lines on my top half.
I wear this with everything as it creates a brilliant torso lengthening line and looks interesting as well as keeping those pesky glasses at hand! My hips are relatively narrow so I like tops that are roomy and V neck on top and snug around the hips, with slim pants, capris or jeans. Something else that works for me is to get long tank tops very good quality, stretchy , and layer a looser wide top over that. I play with the color combos to get the effect I need.
Always make sure my feet look slim in whatever shoes I have on. Just the other day I was trying to explain it to friends and falling short no pun intended of clarity. I think these tips are great to try, but also feel like the outfits that make me feel most attractive are ones where I play around tuck, untuck, add a belt here or there, choose colors that fit my mood, etc. I actually LOVE to emphasize my waist. Holly, it sounds like you might have a similar build — it took me a long time to realize that having all loose, or all tight, clothing made me feel equally un-sexy.
Mixing it up has worked wonders for me. Either way, experimenting seems to be the key. In addition to being short waisted, I have quite a wide rib cage two hand widths and always look much slimmer from the side.
Measure the length from shoulder to hip bone. Measure the length from hip bone to just below the knee cap. Wear a Well-Fitting Bra The right bra lifts the bust, creating a waistline while smoothing out the silhouette. Wear Mid or Low-Rise Jeans and Trousers Dropping the position of the waistband to below the natural waist visually lengthens the torso and shortens the leg line.
Wear V-Necklines V-necklines visually lengthen a short neck and short torso. Create Vertical Integrity with Accessories Wearing long statement necklaces, or necklaces with chunky pendants, visually lengthens the torso in a more suble way.
Wear Long Layers Over a Belted Waist Wearing a high-contrast belt on the natural waist shortens an already short waist. Forum conversations about this post Short, Regular or Long-Waisted? I have often wondered about this, but had no idea how to evaluate my proportions. August 24, at 2: August 24, at 3: August 24, at 4: August 24, at 5: I need to check my proportions!
Angie, Thank you so much for the helpful tip to measure with hand-widths! It is probably totally obvious to others … The only thing I can think of is the high-waisted clothing problem.
Are there other built-in problems I am missing here? Thanks again for this post — incredibly helpful to me. I love this topic! August 24, at 6: Ooh — proportion play!
